VR Provides Seniors with Enjoyment and Betterment

Mar 9, 2017 by Luke Ries

Virtual reality is no longer a thing of the future. With a headset and a small screen you can transport yourself anywhere in the universe, while staying in the comfort of your own home. With this technology, seniors are able to have new experiences and reminisce on places they have once traveled.

How it Helps Seniors

It may seem that virtual reality headsets are gadgets created only for playtime. But new research and uses have determined that using virtual reality programs have helped seniors in many different ways.

  • Provides relaxation because they are able to travel to any place they want to without worrying about the issues of flying. Being in virtual reality can also help them forget about their chronic pain and bring temporary relief to their worries.
  • Reduces the feeling of isolation by being able to virtually travel to different places, giving the sense of being around the public.
  • Helps prevent Dementia and Alzheimer’s by diminishing the three main causes of dementia, anxiety, depression, and chronic pain. Plus, they can visit places they have once been to help rekindle lost memories.
  • Create a motivation to exercise the brain and the body. Some virtual reality programs require you to get up and walk around or follow certain instructions which can help with cognitive abilities.
