Restless Legs Syndrome in Seniors

May 9, 2017 by Luke Ries

Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is a condition that causes aches, pains, itching, or a tingling sensation in the legs, feet, or arms. Typically, when restless legs syndrome is occurring it can give your loved ones an unpleasant feeling and urge to move the body part that it is affecting. It distresses millions of people, but is more common among seniors.

Drug Free Treatments for RLS

Even though moving your legs may stop the pain, it is only a temporary relief for your loved ones. While there are some medications that can help reduce the pains and aches associated with restless legs syndrome, there are also some drug-free treatments that can help your loved one with this condition.

  • Sleep: The more tired your loved ones are the more likely RLS will begin to show its symptoms. By keeping a healthy sleep scheduled and going to bed at the first sign of being tired your loved ones can avoid the aches and pains that RLS brings on. If their legs are really hurting have them get up and walk around, if possible, until the pain goes down.
  • Chamomile Tea: This type of tea provides a relaxing and sleepy feeling to seniors when consumed without added sugar or milk. It does not directly target the problem of RLS but it can help your loved ones relax enough to get some sleep.
  • Warm bath/shower: A warm bath or shower can help relax the muscles in the body and alleviate some pain.
  • Massage: Massaging the affected area can increase blood flow and provide temporary pain relief. This especially works for seniors that are immobile.
  • Hot Water Bottle: Just like a warm bath or shower, a hot water bottle can help relax muscles and reduce pains that are associated with RLS.
  • Low-Impact Exercise: During the day, low-impact exercise can provide legs with needed blood flow to help reduce RLS symptoms that appear at night.
