Chocolate Craving: Dark Chocolate has Health Benefits
Jun 2, 2017 by Luke Ries
Next time your loved one’s chocolate craving kicks in, let them indulge a little bit in the sweet cocoa flavors. Dark chocolate, when eaten in moderation, can actually have healthy advantages to your loved one’s health. The antioxidants found in dark chocolate can decrease the free radicals in your loved one’s body. Free radicals infiltrate blood and can cause cell damage that can lead to many illnesses and diseases.
How Dark Chocolate Improves your Loved One’s Health
While eating dark chocolate alone will not significantly increase the antioxidants in your loved one, eating essential foods including dark chocolate can help reduce the risk of the following issues:
- Heart Disease
Dark chocolate contains compounds that are protective against the oxidation of LDL cholesterol in your blood. When LDL is lowered overtime it can reduce your loved one’s risk of cardiovascular disease. Lowered LDL has also been linked to lowering blood pressure, if you eat one serving of dark chocolate a couple of times a week.
- Alzheimer’s Disease
The high levels of flavanols in dark chocolate can help increase blood flow to the brain. An increase of blood flow to the brain can preserve your aging loved one’s cognitive abilities. In addition to the flavanols, the caffeine and theobromine found in chocolate can also help temporarily improve brain functions.
- Mood Enhancer
Eating dark chocolate can be a mood enhancer for your loved one. It contains a chemical called phenylethylamine, which is a natural chemical that brains produce which releases many endorphins. When your loved one’s brain releases endorphins it will make them happier overall.
- Blood Cholesterol
In addition to dark chocolate lowering LCL cholesterol levels, it can also increase the HDL cholesterol levels in your loved one’s blood. HDL is considered good cholesterol that keeps your loved one’s arteries and heart healthy.
